Description:
The 2018 Optical Surgical Navigation Workshop will focus on the recent explosion in the use of molecular imaging for surgical guidance. Novel imaging techniques have the potential to significantly enhance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in all areas of medicine. For solid tumors in particular, fluorescence guided surgery with molecular navigation is an emerging field that is gaining significant traction with multiple ongoing clinical trials currently in progress. This field is being driven by the development of molecular targeting agents, including activatable “smart probes” as well as advanced detection methods such as high-resolution microscopy and hybrid technologies such as photoacoustic and fluorescence lifetime imaging.
As we move toward adopting minimally invasive technologies such as endoscopic, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, imaging with fluorescence provides enhanced visual definition between diseased and normal tissue for improved outcome and decreased inadvertent injury. This workshop will bring together clinicians and scientists in each of these promising areas of research to highlight how imaging on a molecular level is advancing novel surgical strategies.
As we embark on the pathway to making “precision medicine” a reality, molecular imaging has the potential to provide critical advances in the field of surgery.
